RATA DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. (Special “Chronicle” Service.) The Rata Rifle Club held its annual shoot under service conditions for Sir Heaton Rhodes’ Cup. There was a full muster of members and th > scoring was of a very high nature. Following are the highest scores:—• C. Gower 129 C. Lawson 121 H. Bryce 117 A. Rhodes 116 Al. Grav 115 G. Follett 97 A. McDonald 94 In the shoot-off for Mr R. J. Smith’s trophy, G. Follett proved an easy .winner. MARTON ATHLETIC CLUB. At a meeting of the committee of the Marton Athletic Club on Wednesday evening, it was decided to hold evening sports on the Marton Park on Wednesday, December 19, commencing at 6.30 o’clock. The following programme was approved:— Cycling. —Half mile, first 30s; second 10s. One Mile: First £2, second 15s. Two miles: First £2 10s; second £l. Three miles: First £2; second 15s. Pedestrian Events (open). —100 yards maiden. 100 yards. 22 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards, one mile, and boys’ walking lace. CRICKET. On the Marton cricket ground this afternoon a friendly match will be played between Corlett’s XI. and the Colts. THE PICTURES. “The language of the lips and eyes is something every girl should study.” Pola Negri, celebrated for her love scenes on the screen, declares this is more important in winning a man’s heart than baby talk, cooking or short skirts. “Put your soul into your eyes,” says the Paramount star, “and let all the sweetness in your nature signal the message from your heart.” One of the intense scenes in the actress’ latest starring picture, “The Secret Hour,” which will be seen at the Alarton Town Hall this afternoon and evening, shows her conversing with Kenneth Thomson, leading man, in the “language of the lips and eyes.” GENERAL NEWS. Dr. Townshend announces that he has been joined in partnership by Air C. Al. Holdaway, surgeon dentist, of Invercargill, and that in futur the practice will be carried on under the name of Townshend and Holdaway. LAWN TENNIS. On the tennis courts on Thursday evening a buttons match was played between S. A. Go ver and K. A. Williams (holders) and R- C. Ball and G. Porter (challengers), the holders winning by 9 to 8. PERSONAL. A Gazette notice states that the N.Z. Long and Efficient Service Medal has been warded the Rev. R. H. Catherwood, of Turakina, chaplain 2nd Class N.Z. Chaplains’ Department.
