OHAKUNE

PROPOSED DOMAIN A public meeting to consider the advisability of establishing a Domain Board to administer the property around the second lake, was held on Alonday night. The Mayor, Mr G. J. Goldfinch, presided, and stated that the area of the property in question was about 152 acres. Air W. Richardson suggested that only a portion of the property should be taken over. The Mayor said he considered that only the property around the lake was worth j reserving. Much of the bush was liable to be destroyed by fire. They must remember there was a fair amount of timber and a large amount of firewood on it. A domain board should be established to take over the whole block and do some planting around the boundary, said. Mr Christie. This would help considerably to stop any fire spreading through the area. If the place was looked after it could be made into a beauty spot. He thought it was up to the community to take an interest in the matter and preserve this piece of native land. After a full discussion on the matter, Air Richardson moved that the meeting be adjourned until Wednesday, December 12, and that as many as possible inspect the area. The motion was seconded by Air Mahoney and carried unanimously. It was also agreed that further information regarding the area bo obtained from the Crown ranger. FIREMAN EVETTS FAREWELLED After the transaction of business at the meeting of the Ohakune Fire Brigade the other evening, the members met together to take farewell of Fireamn R. Evetts, who has been transferee to Inglewood. Superintendent Townson expressed the regret felt by members of the brigade at Fireman Evetts’ departure. He would be greatly missed by all. He had been a very energetic fireman and was dependable and regular in his attendance. He could always be relied upon to do his best in the interests of the brigade. Deputy-Superintendent Woodward, Firemen Cunningham, L. Nation, Cooper and Messrs R. Eaton, P. Wood and McKay also spoke. They all joined in wishing Fireman Evetts every success and happiness. In addition to his work in the brigade, he had taken a keen interest in sport in general and would be missed by several bodies. As a “postie” he had proved himself an obliging and courteous official. For some time he was secretary of the fire brigade, and he had attended to his duties in a most attentive manner. On behalf of the members of the fire brigade, the superintendent handed Fireman Evetts a splendid pipe and a neat, well-filled pouch. It was trusted that he would long be spared to enjoy a good smoke. Fireman Evetts suitably replied.
