LAID TO REST
LATE MR. W. G. BASSETT HOMAGE AT GRAVESIDE The esteem in which the late Air W. G. Bassett was held was reflected in the large number of friends who paid their last respects by attending the funeral which took place yesterday afternoon. After a short service, conducted by the Rev. J. Olphert . t the residence of the late Mr Bassett, the casket was borne by Alessrs W. Bassett-Smith, and R. N. Billens, sons-in-law of the deceased, and Alessrs F. J. Beaven and Elliott, to the hearse, where numerous beautiful wreaths were placed upon it. About 60 motor cars followed the hearse to the Aramoho cemetery, where Air Olphert read the burial service. In character, unselfishness, courage, faithfulness, vision and devotion to duty, said Mr Olphert, the late Air Bassett was every inch a man. He honoured his parents and God crowded him with long years of usefulness and an abundant measure of happiness in the family life ami in the service ot humanity as an employer. In small or great contracts undertaken he made it His business to know every part of the work and, until somewhat recent years, to work with the men. Thus he knew Low much mental and physical strain, any class of work entailed. Of .ik jub’ic service, it was known to all He was not merely a money-maker, but bore his full share of public service giving unstintingly of his time, strength, talent and money for the city in which the greater part of his life was spent. Of his Christian character, influence and service, like all great men, he hural ly and ..hanfully acknowledged that all the streams of of his character and service had their source in the “riven Rock.” It was ever his aim to live life upon Christ’s lines.
