ARTISTIC WORKS
NEW FINDS AT HERCULANEUM ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE AND FURNISHINGS. | [ Times Cables. ] Received Dec. 6, 11 p.m. LONDON, Dee. 6. The correspondent of the Tinies at Rome states that previously unknown ancient architecture and furnishings have been found in excavations at Herculaneum, which revealed houses of two stories, contrasting with the single storied of Pompeii. The upper rooms were reached by modern staircases, and many contained beautifully carved wooden furnitureexcellently preserved. Digging along the road leading to the seat, workmen disclosed entrances to several patrician villas, but there were no traces of human remains, the inhabitants having presumably escaped in boats. There were many artistic finds including statues of Mercury, Diana, and Apollo, and terracotta coloured glass ornaments. Also found was a wooden press for crushing olives, which is identical with those used to-day. The authorities have decided to leave everything where it was found, to enable visitors to envisage the daily lives of the inhabitants.
