SABBATH OBSERVANCE

Sir, —I have been interested in the large amount of correspondence connected with the above which has appeared in the “Chronicle,” and I can quite understand why many resent being forced into keeping the so-called Sabbath. We seem to forget, or perhaps do not understand, that the Jewish Sabbath was Saturday—the seventh day—and when the Law was given to Aloses the Fourth Commandment, “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy,” formed part of the decalogue and was for the Jews only. During the Jewish Dispensation or Age, from the time that the Ten Commandments were given to Aloses right up to the Cross, the Sabbath or Seventh Day was kept holy. Our Saviour Himself, being a Jew, kept the Law, but after the Cross, when He said, “It is finished,” the old Dispensation passed automatically away, and the Christian era or age came in; and wc are now under the Law of Grace or Love. Not thou shalt not, but “If ye love me, keep Aly Commandments, etc.” If w'e do not rightly divide the Word of Truth as admonished by the great Apostle Paul to Timothy, we become hopelessly muddled. Under the new dispensation, we are nowhere commanded to keep Saturday or Sunday holy. But because our Saviour rose f rom the dead the first day of the week, we followers of the Christ meet together to commemorate the greatest event in history, as did the disciples of old. They are our example. Wc, therefore, see that those who are not followers of the Christ should not be compelled to keep holy the Lord’s Day or Sunday. Christians, on the other hand, love to keep that day apart for service for the One who died to redeem us all. Let us remember that in the last Great Day, wh’en all will have to give an account of ourselves, the great question will be, Why did you reject my Son Not why did you not keep holy a certain day? The world to-day as at the beginning is rejecting the Son of God—the greatest of all sins. Personally, I see no harm in non-Christians going to see the landing of the fliers on Sunday; but for those who profess to be followers of the Christ, it would be better for them to be about their Alaster’s business. 4 ‘DISCIPLE.”
