CITY COUNCIL RATES
PAYMENTS ON ACCOUNT RESPONSE EY PUBLIC Owing to the delay caused by the late sitting of thie Assessment Court the collection of rates by the Wanganui City Council will not go ahead this year with the rapidity of former years owing to the fact that many propertied are being submitted to the Government for sale and it will be some little time before the Government Valuation Department’s decision is known as to whether it will buy at its valuar tion or reduce to the valuation disclosed by the objectors. Some ratepayers have responded to the City Council’s appeal for payment of rates on account, £570 having been paid in on Wednesday and nearly £4OO on Thursday. Yesterday the payments amounted to £730. The Council’s present overdraft at. the bank is a heavy one, the interest bill alone amounting to £lO a day. In recognising that the ratepayers, who have already made a payment of the rates, have shown a sense of civic duty, it is felt that the others need a further reminder only, to cause them to follow suit. It is pointed out that any amount will be received by the Council on account and the necessary adjustment of underpayments or overpayments will be made at an early date. The Council, and indeed the officials, would welcome a daily tally in thousands instead of hundreds as at present. In such an event the collection of the rates would soon assume proportions similar to those which have generally existed at this time of the year. Ratepayers would bo well advised in bringing the assessment slips forwarded by the Valuation Department so that the staff may quickly ascertain the probable amount which is likely to be charged.
