HUNTERVILLE

VALEDICTORY Members of the local Fire Brigade met on Thursday night to say “goodbye’ ’to Mr P. J. Finn, who has been a member of the brigade since its re-or-ganisation and who intends taking up farming pursuits in the South Island. Captain Gordon presided, and on behalf of the brigade presented Mr Finn with a pipe, and tobacc. pouch, the latter having engraved on a silver plate the words “P. J. Finn, from Huntervillc Volunteer Fire Brigade. In making the presentation the chairman referred to Mr Finn’s valuable work as hydrantman and treasurer to the brigade and wished him and Mrs Finn every success and happiness in the future. Mr Finn briefly replied thanking members for their goodwill and stating that he had n joyed his term in the brigade and in Huntervillc. SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Hunterville District High School Committee was held on Wednesday night. Present: Messrs R. M. S. Jones (chair), L. J. Thompson, W. G. Cunningham, W. O’Brie , R. Dukeson and W. J. Whyte. The Education Board wrote notifying tb» t Mr C. C. Southey had been appointed headmaster and he vrould take up duty on October 1. Accounts amounting to £7 3s 3d were passed for payment. Mr J. J. Thomasen, chairman of the Rewa Committee forwarded £2 towards the dental clinic. The director. Dental Hygiene, wrote stating that a subsidy would be forthcoming.

The Education Board forwarded £1 17s 6d extra capitation on High School.

The chairman said it had been suggested that an option be obtained over the Anglican Church paddock. If this could be obtained the new school could be built on higher ground. Mr Thompson moved that the chairman and secretary endeavour to obtain an option over the land and that application be made to the Board to purchase it. This was seconded by Mr W. O’Brien and carried.

The chairman said the Board should be written to urging definite information about the second department. It was decided to circularise neighbouring schools asking the number of pupils available for the coming year and also I’ l at the Board be asked to appoint a male teacher next year. The chairman reported that the tennis club had offered to donate two barrels of Restar to the Committee. — Accepted with thanks. The secretary of the tennis club also notified that children would be permitted to play on the courts on suitable occasions under supervision. Mr Dukeson said the Committee owned a tennis net in good order and he moved that this be given to the tennis club. This was agreed to. SIL VERHOPE DANCE A successful dance was held at Silverhope on Tuesday in aid of the tennis court funds. Music was supplied by Merwood’s orchestra, extras being played by Messrs R. Inder, E. Giesen, P. Waitere and S. Potaka. Mr C. R. Higgins acted as M.C. The ladies provided supper. PERSONAL Mrs W. Winchester will arrive in Huntervillc next week and will assist with the Persbyterian Bulb Show on September 25. Mr C. Mitchell, who was injured in the railway collision at Master’s Crossing last week. tied in Palmerston North Hospital on Wednesday night. Mr W. G. Murray has left foi America, where he intends spending t .live months gaining new experience in his profession. At the June theory examin ’ions Miss Nancy Watt completed her A.T.C.L. examination, gaining 84 marks in the art of teaching and 77 in the rudiments of music. On Thursday night the Fire Brigade elected Mr G. Hall treasurer in succession to Mr P. J. Finn. Mr J. F. Follas was elected senior hydrantman and H.Spooner junior hydrantman.
