Mr Howard C. Edwards Toft yesterday for Wellington to attend the Dental Conference.

Mr C. G. Young returned to Wanganui yesterday after a holiday in the Wellington district.

Mr R. W. Coupland, manager of the Wanganui office of the Tourist Department, is at present on annual leave.

Evangelist W. R. Hibburt, of the Church of Christ, Wellington, arrived in Wanganui on Saturday and assisted in conducting the services yesterday in connection with the opening of the new church buildings in Ingestre Street. Mr and Mrs Hibburt are the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Bebarfoll.

A British official wireless message states that the Colonial Secretary lias selected Sir Walter Riddell, principal of Hertford College, Oxford, to be chairman of the Commission to be appointed in Ceylon to work out a scheme for the establishment of a university. Sir Walter Riddell will sail for Ceylon early in July.

The death occurred on Saturday of Air John Kemp, one of the first motormen with the Wanganui tramways. During his 25 years’ service with the corporation he gave entire satisfaction and was highly esteemed by his fellow-employees and friends. He returned in January last from a visit to his mother in Scotland, and since then had not enjoyed the best of health.

The death has occurred, states a London cablegram, of Sir Westby Brook Percival, K.C.M.G., formerly AgentGeneral in London for New Zealand and Tasmania. He was born at Launceston, Tasmania, on May 11, 1854, and was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch, New Zealand, and at Stonyhurst College. He was admitted as a barrister at Middle Temple in 1878 and practised in Christchurch. From 1887 to 1891 he represented Christchurch in Parliament. He was Chairman of Committees 1891; Agent-Gen-eral for New Zealand from 1891 to 1896, and Agent-General for Tasmania from 1896 to 1898. He was created Knight of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Leo XIII. in 1891, and was a Member of the Royal Commission for the Chicago Exhibition of 1894-95, also for the Paris Exhibition of 1900. He was a Member of the Tariff Commission in 1904. Several books were written by him relative to farming and labour, and timber and forest products in New Zealand. In 1880 he married Miss Jessie Johnston, daughter of the Hon. John Johnston, M.L.C., of Wellington and in 1894 was created Knight Commander of Sv. Michael and St. George.
