HISTORIC VESSEL

STEAMER HINEMOA GOVERNMENT SERVICE TO END. [ Special “Chronicle” Servlet. 1 AUCKLAND, June 8. With the withdrawal after 53 years at sea, of the Now Zealand Government steamer Hinemoa from the Auck-land-Pacific Island run, the career of perhaps the most historic vessel in New Zealand waters nears its end. A three-masted schooner (rigged vessel) she was built in 1876 by Messrs Scott and Company Ltd. of Greenock, and launched in May of that year. In 1885 she was purchased by the New Zealand Government to replace the Stella, and for many years carried the Governors and members of Parliament on the country’s business. Latterly, however, she has been engaged in the Auckland-Norfolk Island and Auckland Niue Island trades, and only six months ago established the fastest passage of her career between Norfolk Island and Auckland. Despite her ago (she celebrated her fifty-third birthday on Junc 1) men who have sailed in her maintain that she is the most seaworthy vessel afloat. The Hinemoa will be offered for sale, and is being replaced by the motor-ship Maui Pomare.
