ON THE TRAIL

MT. EDEN ESCAPEE PRESENCE IN KING COUNTRY. [ Per Association. J TAUMARUNUI, Junc 8. Yesterday afternoon the local policy received information that a Packard motor-car had been found abandoned near a farmhouse at Hikimutu, 12 or 14 miles south of Taumarunui. An investigation proved that the car was one which had been stolen from Auckland last week and tho opinion wa’ expressed that the escaped prisoner Buckley used the car to make his way into the King Country, where ho abandoned it, probably owing to the benzine giving out. It is believed the car passed through Taumarunui on Sunday night. Further information with regard to the stolen Packard car shows that Buckley abandoned it on Sunday afternoon and persuaded a settler to drive him to Owhango. The settler, unaware of his identity, expected him to return for tho car, hence the delay in notifying the police, who did not know of the car’s abandonment until yesterday. Meanwhile, Buckley, who has friends in this district and knows the country well, is still at large. Sergeant O’Brien and Detective Da\is, of Auckland, aro at present making investigations at Hikimutu.
