PROLONGED DROUGHT
NO RAIN IN NELSON THE CITY WATER SUPPLY. [ Per Press Association. J NELSON, Alarch 21. Difficulties caused by thp drought which has prevailed since December last, are reaching a climax, and the City Council has decided that if no rain comes within a day or two the city water supply will be cut down to half. In the last four months the rainfall recorded at the Cawthron Meterological Station has been 3.65 in., against an average for the same period (vltl. ten days of the present month yet to go) over the past 45 years of about .11 Un. Tn December 2.oin fell. January of this year was a dry month. In February 1.56 in was recorded, while in the present month to date the fall has been .05in. The dam is now down about 10ft.
Anxiety has been expressed as to the purity of the city water supply, but Professor Easterfield considers no danger attaches to the use of the water in its present condition, while Dr. S. A. Gibbs, a city councillor, says there is no reason for anxiety in that matter.
