An application for a Dominion award in the timber industry made Io the Arbitration Court at Wellington, yesterday, was declined on the ground that insufficient grounds had been shown for departing from the present system of local awards.

In the Police Court at Wairoa yesterday morning a young man. whose name was suppressed, employed as cashier by a local mercantile firm, pleaded guilty to stoning £232 7s 8d from his employers. The greater part of the money had since been repaid. He was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court.
Tn the Alagist rate’s Court at Christ church, yesterday William James AVhitla, was sentenced to 14 da vs’ im
prisonment for assaulting porters on a Lyttelton train and two months’ hard labour for using obscene language in the presence of women. Hi* was also convicted for drunkenness. The Alagistrate, Mr Lowry, said: '‘Railway oflicals have a dangerous time without an added danger from men like you.”
A Dunedin message states that the City Council had be "ore it on Wednesday evening a recommendation that m view of the eneral labourer’s recent award calling for increases which would involve £5,000 and an increase in the general te, the finances be adjusted on the basis of employing fewer hands, and, where reasonable, tenders be invited for works. It was stated variously that from 25 to 50 men would be affected. After discussion the report was adopted.
