SEAFARERS’ DEMAND EIGHT-HOUR DAY WANTED. Received March 19. 8.50 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) MELBOURNE, Mar. 19. A case has commenced in which the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia is claiming increased pay and better conditions for its members on deep sea, bay, harbour and river craft. The claims for masters range from £45 7s lOd monthly for passenger vessels of 125 tons and under to £134 17s fid monthly for passenger vessels of over 10,000 tons, and the Guild is also claiming increased salaries for all members from sixth officer and fifth engineer to captain and chief engineer, in addition to an eight-hour day and provision for overtime.
