The funeral of the late Constable Robert Sims took place at the Aramoho cemetery yesterday afternoon. The large attendance of local residents testified to the general esteem in which the late constable was held in the community, and many have reason to remember his many kind and sympathetic acts as a police officer. As many members of the local police force as could be spared from duty assembled in uniform to pay their last tribute of respect to their departed colleague. The cortege also included some ex-members of the force and members of the Orange Lodge, of which deceased was a member, and Mr W. Bruce represented the executive of the Wanganui Justices Association. The Rev. Air King, of Wanganui East, officiated at the graveside.

The death occurred suddenly on Saturday night, at his residence in Epsom Avenue, of Mr Joseph William Poyaton, Stipendiary Magistrate of Auckland since 1918. The late Air Poynton was born in Kyncton, Victoria, Australia, in 1861, and was brought to New Zealand by his father, the late Mr Joseph Poynton, in 1863. He was educated privately, and started out in life as a gold miner at Maori Creek, on the West Coast. Ho followed the occupation of a gold miner for 10 years, when he met Sir Robert Stout, who advised him to study law. With that concentration and indomitable energy that were always characteristic of him, the late Mr Poynton set himself to the task of qualifying for the law, and in 1891 he was admitted as a barrister and solicitor. He practised in Wellington until 1895, when he was appointed Magistrate at Invercargill. In 1900 he was appointed Public Trustee, and in 1910 Secretary to the Treasury and Superintendent of Advances to Settlers, He was appointed a Stipendiary Afagistratc of Auckland in 1918. A few weeks prior to his death he was granted six months’ leave of absence. He leaves a widow and one son.
