NO EVIDENCE

CASE DISMISSED 1 ALLEGED GAMING ACT BREACHES [ Per Press Association. ] GREYMOUTH, Nov. 14. Charges against James Hassall and Albert Henry Chunn of keeping common gaming houses were dismissed by Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., on the ground that there was no evidence of actual betting having occurred. The police therefore withdrew a charge of assisting to keep a common gaming house against James Bernard Heffernan and eleven men found on the premises. One of the men protested against arrest by the police but his application for a day’s wages was refused, the Magistrate stating that the police were acting in the interests of the public, and it was not usual to allow costs against them.
