TRADE AND INDUSTRY

NOTES FROM ABROAD. Indian Hydro-electric Expansion. The first hydro-electric scheme undertaken in India was inaugurated in 1902 with generating works on the Cauvery River at Sivasamudram, Mysore State. Having as its primary object the supply of power to the Kolar gold fields, ninety-two miles distant, this initial undertaking has constantly been expanded from 6,000 horsepower, 3-phase, 60-cycle, to a total capacity of 46,000 horsepower soon to be available on completion of a seventh installation of 14,000 horsepower. German Knit Goods Industry. Germany has 50,800 establishments, employing 221,514 wage earners engaged in the manufacture of knit goods of all kinds, according to the first postwar industrial census in Germany, taken in 1925. The total capacity of the machines used in the 50,800 establishments amounted to 46,488 horsepower. The latter figure seems to indi-, cate that there are a relatively largo number of small plants, equipped with hand-knitting machines as well as homeknitting industry. The branch producing knit-fabric (chamoisette) gloves acounts for 16,057 establishments, employing 32,515 wage earners.
