IN THE MARKETS

COMMERCIAL COMMENT RISE IN SICILY ALMONDS. SULTANAS AND CURRANTS EASIER. What are stated to be typical conditions for this period of the year are at present existing in general market lines, and the tone taken all round, is a moderate one. Expectations are stated to be for a steady improvement, and the brighter position of the New Zealand export trade favours this anticipation. A commercial commentary follows: Sicily Almonds. Cables received a few days ago advised a sudden and sharp firming in the market for new crop Sicily almonds of ten pounds per ton. This advance, however, was not of long duration, as advices received during the week-end advised a decline of £B, so that present quotations are only £2 per ton dearer than those advised three weeks ago. Reductions Shown. New season’s Smyrna sultanas are now advised by cable as being reduced Is per hundredweight for September shipment. Quotations for new season’s Amalia currants are( now listed at a decline of 3s per hundredweight. Pineapples Slightly Weaken. Although the bookings for the July August steamer are all finished, cables received from. Singapore advised a further slight weakness, a comparison of the previous week’s quotations show ing a decline. Heavy Advances Expected English shippers of Brazil nuts have advised by cable that it is now certain that the stocks available will be insufficient for the requirements of the trade on this line, and that further heavy advances are anticipated. Ceylon Export Oils. Citronella oil is produced in Ceylon and is largely used by soap manufacturers. The c.i.f.e cost to-day is the lowest quoted for many years, and Colombo cables just to hand advise a further reduction in prices of Jd per pound in the different grades according to strength. . Shippers from Ceylon now offer both the refined and crude coconut oil at ' slight c.i.f. cost. Cables were received last week advising a reduction of 1/6 and 2/- per hundredweight respectively, and that an easier market was generally evident in all coconut products. Advance on Last Season’s New season’s number one hand-pick-ed Chinese peanuts have just been quoted for shipment commencing October/ November, and in comparison to the opening rates for new season’s last year, and to the closing prices for present season’s, show an advance of £4 10s per ton. It is estimated that supplies of new season’s will hardly arrive in sufficient time for Christmas trade.
