WALLABY’S CLOSE CALL
WASHED OUT TO SEA RESUSCITATION SAVES LIFE. A wallaby, in attempting to cross Talleburgeda Creek, near Tweed Heads, New South Wales, recently, found the undertaking a difficult one, owing to the out-going tide. It was quickly washed past the mouth of the creek into the sea.
In the surf the wallaby put up a brave effort to regain the shore. It ducked its head under each breaker, and had almost gained the shore when a fisherman reached out to grab the animal, which, however, again made out to sea. It received a severe buffeting by the waves, and was later washed up into shallow water near the rocks at Big Burleigh. Three visitors pulled the wallaby out of the water in an unconscious condition. Resuscitation methods were immediately applied. A large quantity of water was dislodged from the wallaby, and after 20 minutes the animal showed signs of life. Later it was taken to the edge of the scrub close by, and after shaking itself it hopped away.
