KOTAHITANGA BEAT MARTON Kotahitanga seniors met the Marton senior fifteen on Saturday at Marton Park and after a somewhat ragged game the visiting team, who were not at full strength, won by 6 poi-nts (two unconverted tries) to nil. Half-time came with no score, but in the second half two tries, the first effort being a very good one. Marton (red and white) kicked off and Fitche.r immediately distinguished himself in a corkscrew run, J. Gibbons eventually bringing him down. The visiting half attempted to open up the play but faulty passing saw an other--wise promising movement break down. Two free kicks in quick succession then came to Marton and a good deal of ground was gained. The magpies then took a hand in attack but Wood broke away and carried play to half way. Soon afterwards the Marton backs w’ero seen in a passing bout but the inside backs cramped the wing-three-quarters. At this stage Marton forwards were seen to advantage. Gronn and Wood being conspicuous in good work. The red and whites set up a hot attack in Kotahitanga’s territory but Fitches put in a wonderful save. Marton compelled the magpies to force twice in quick succession. Paki broke through and charged down Higgin’s clearing kick. Ragged play in which Marton had the best of matters followed. Higgins then attempted a “pot” which went outside the upright. For the first time in the game the visiting team invaded Marton’s citadel by means of a good run and short punt by S. Paki. Finnimore, however, brought off a smart mark and the Marton forwards transferred operations. Good forward play by Kotahitanga saw play back again in Marton’s twentylive, but Finnimore forced. From the drop out Fitches essayed a drop but his shot was a “grubber” and Wood broke away in a great run down the side line before being grassed. Halftime was called shortly afterwards. The Visitors Score. On resumption Marton were compelled to force. Kotahitanga forwards set up a hot attack but Marton retaliated and Gould went within inches of scoring, S. Paki forcing. Marton attacked again and Referee Turvey warned a Maori forward for rough play. Gibbons’ attempt at goal from a free was a creditable one. After Bush had led a good forward rush for Marton, the Kotahitanga second five-eighths made a good opening, thus enabling S. Paki to score a runaway try. B. Paki’s kick failed.

Elated by their success Kotahitanga began to throw the ball about and a good movement ended in a score well out. S. Paki failed at goal. Marton then took a turn in attack and after some exciting play right under the winning team’s goal mouth Finnimore marked but he made a weak attempt to goal. Up and down play followed and Marton were awarded a free kick, a Kotahitanga forward playing the ball in the scrum. Gibbons’ attempt at goal went very close but the game ended without further incident. Kotahitanga 6 Marton 0 Mr F. O. Turvey was referee.
