CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS DANCE { From the '* Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] The annual children’s fancy dress dance was held on Friday night and the packed Town Hall, which was decorated with flags, proved the popularity of a children’s dance. About 150 children paraded in the grand march and the gay colours and quaint costumes of the youngsters added greatly to the enjoyment of the evening. The task of the judges (Mesdames Shield, Honeyfield and C. Carey, of Patea) was a very difficult one, but their efforts gave every satisfaction. , Each dance was entered into with great enjoyment by the children who held the floor until 10 o’clock and were then quite ready for supper. The tables were prettily decorated with blue and pink streamers, and autumn leaves and foliage. Prizes were awarded as follows: — Prettiest girl, 8 to 14.—Amy Graham as Maori, 1; Jean Watkins, as squaw, 2. Prettiest boy: C. Spratt, Indian chief, 1; E. Palmer, Spaniard, 2. Most original girl: G. Forsyth, as Irish colleen. FRONTIERSMEN’S BALL The local Legion of Frontiersmen held the first annual ball in the Town Hall on Thursday evening in place of the annual smoke concert held previously. The committee, consisting of -Messrs Myhill, Benseman and Ross left no stone unturned to ensure the public of Waverley a good evening’s entertainment, their efforts being highly appreciated by the large crowd. Visitors included Captain Hardie, and several officers from the Wanganui Legion, also Major Chisholm and officers and men from the military camp now being held at the racecourse.

Mr P. D. Tennant acted as host to the visitors and carried out his duties in a most capable manner. Messrs Benseman and Stevens acted as M’sC. In the supper room Mrs T. J. Davis, with a committee of helpers, provided supper. Very appreciative comment was passed by all on the table decorations which were carried out by Miss G. Ross. Coloured lights overhead blended beautifully with the streamers intertwined with autumn leaves and variously coloured chrysanthemums. Mr L. Neilson, as secretary, and the committee deserve every credit for their efforts to make the evening the success it was.
