An application for a lamp in Pharazyn Street has been held over by the City Council until such time as an inspection has been made to ascertain what additional lamps arc required in the various parts of the city. The matter of adopting a by-law compelling dogs to be kept under control will be considered by the City Council when the city by-laws are being amended. The ranger has been instructed to impound and destroy stray unregistered dogs. The City Engineer last night submitted to the works committee of the Wanganui City Council a schedule of drainage work to be undertaken with the loan recently authorised. This had the approval of the committee and it is proposed to proceed with the work at once in order of urgency. A judgment debtor who said at a recent sitting of the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court that the only property he possessed was a wheelbarrow, was seen in another light yesterday when he admitted that he recently rode home in a taxi, paying a fare of £l. For the theft of watches and a bottle of rum, of a total value of £2O 13s, David Green and Sidney Haggie, who appeared for sentence, were given terms of imprisonment of one month and 14 days respectively, by Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., at the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Consistent and increasing interest is being shown by Wanganui people in the Public Library, and comparative figures of books issued in 1926 and in 1927, give a satisfactory position. In April last year, 7200 books were issued from the library, compared with 8009 last month. For the months—JanuaryApril last year, 27,707 volumes were handed out, and 30,256 for the corresponding four months period this year.
