“BY THE THROAT”

INCREASED BANK INTEREST “MOST POWERFUL TRUST IN NEW ZEALAND.” We are in the grip of the Associated Banks of New Zealand. They are the most powerful trust in the Dominion and they have us by the throat. This statement was made at last evening’s meeting- of the Wanganui City Council by the Mayor (Mr W. J. Rogers), when ho moved that the Con nr i I should voice a protest against the action of the associated banks in raising the rate of interest, and that it should heartily support the action taken in this matter by the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce. “I think we should all get our backs up,” said Cr. A. E. Halligan, who seconded the motion. Cr. C. H. Burnett supported the motion. Public bodies and private individuals, he said, were all struggling with difficulties and were not in a condition to accept the bank’s action lying down. The Mayor and Cr. W. AL Falconer were appointed to draft a letter of protest.
