CIRCUS FUNERAL PYRE
RIOT CAUSED IN BOMBAY SECRET TUNNEL FOR ESCAPE. BOMBAY, April 27. The announcement made by the directors of a large circus at Bombay that a man would be burned alive on a Hindu funeral pyre caused widespread interest and the climax nearly resulted in a riot. A large crowd gathered round an enormous pyre of wood soaked in petrol while a small Japanese, who was to be sacrificed, was lashed on top. When the pyre was set alight dense smoke hid everything and the great heat scorched the crowd, which was forced back. It was noticed, however, that the ground sounded hollow on stamping, and a tunnel was discovered running from the pyre to a neighbourhood shelter. The supposed sacrifice was roughly handled by the crowd, which afterwards invaded the ticket office for a refund of their money.
