WHEAT AND FLOUR
GOVERNMENT S POLICY NO EMBARGO ON IMPORTS [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, March 8. The Government’s policy in regard to the wheat and flour question wr.s defined by the Minister of Agriculture the Hon. O. J. Hawken to-day. There will be no embargo on tho importation of flour, and the dumping duty will not be increased. The Tarrrf Revision Commission, however, will inquire into the whole position of tne wheat industry, and if there is founo to be a discrepancy in the relative ' duties of flour and wheat tho Government will endeavour to get tho Housr next session to agree to an adjustment of the tariff. The Government has considered the alternative suggested solution of thn present difficulty, namely an embargo on flour, but the objections are: (I) such action might reasonably be regard cd as being in conflict with the reciprocal agreement w r ith Australia; (2) an embargo would not be in the interests of the consumer; (3) in view of the extra quantity of wheat grown this year it is very doubtful if an embargo on flour importations would have the effect hoped for by the New Zealand growers.
