INTO A RIVER

CAR FALLS NINETY FEET OCCUPANTS NARROWLY ESCAPE DEATH. [ Per Press Association. ] HAWERA, March 8. A sensational accident occurred on tho Tongahoe Valley road, near Hawera, late on Mondiay afternoon, a car falling over a bank 90 feet into tho Tongahoe river. The occupants, John Wicks and his son Alfred, were badly injured. The ntishap was duo to the steering gear locking on a turn in the* road. Wicks senior was thrown clear half why down, and his son fell the whole distance, narrowly escaping drowning. A passer-by brought the injured men to Hawera, and the elder was removed to hospital suffering from shock and the crushing of several ribs and extensive bruising. Alfred Wicks was taken to his home at Normanby with injuries to his back. The chr was complotolywreckod.
