There was some great racing, with the favourites failing consistently. The totalisator figures for the flay were £25.586. against £27.743 on the opening day last year, a decrease of £1967. Approaching the final stages of the race for the Nolan Cup on«* of the leading horses fell and two toppled over him. two jockeys. H. Gilmer and A. What should have been a fine rate for the Egmont Cup was completely spoiled by the. muddling pare set over the first mile, and what should have beer, a very keen struggle rescL e’l its. I ncle Dave an I Sunny \ ale were the early leaders, the pair making play ap the straight from San Fera, Rata piko, Sansalino ami Bustler. At th< half mile the favourite moved up. where the hading pair retired beaten. an«l San Fera and Bustler were together o»-er the la*t hurdle, eight lengths ahead of Sansalino. Uncle Dave and Katapiko. In the run home San Fera was better than the northerner and won by a length and a half, with Rata piko a dozen lengths away. While Ranger, Sansalino and Uncle Dave were the next to finish. Sunny Vale fell at the last fence. Pelham Too Good. Betting took a wide range in the Flying Handicap, and although PelLaui was favourite he was at a good price. Sleet, The Lamb, Bonogne. Rehutai. Oration and Lady Bentinck all carried between three and four hundred tic kets. At the start Sleet dwelt. Bon ogne I«‘*l out from Oration, Lady Ben tinck, Pouma. Rehutai. Pelham and The Lamb, and running past the half mile Oration was a couple of lengths clear of Pouma. with Pelham, Lady Bentinrk. Rehutai, Bonogne and The Laud) following. Pouma was up with Oration at the home turn, with Lady Bent inc k heading the next lot, comprising Rehutai. Bonogne and The Lamb. At the half distance both the leaders were collared by the favourite, who went away over the last bit to win very easily by a clear length. The Lamb finished very fast over the last hundred yards to head Pouma for second money, ami Lady Bentinrk and Oration were close up. with Sleet, Bonogne and Rehutai A Smart Youngster Barkers wanted nothing else but the two-year-old Seat own in the Maiden Scurry, and his supporters had some uneasy moments before the youngster landed the stake. Monaghan, the second favourite, did not carry half as much as the two-year-old. Monaghan was actually the first to begin, but at the end of a furlong Soatown and Bonona were going with him. Across the top the favourite dropped bark, Bonona leading into the straight from Monaghan. Scatown. Royal Mint. Hineora and Paitonu. Monaghan was a couple of lengths ahead of the favour ite at the half distance, but R. Reed rode a vigorous finish on Scatown and got up to win by a length and a half. Bonona. who ran wide on the turn, was a couple of lengths away third, and Royal Mint fourth, the next to finish bring Petal. Popular Win, Captain Gazeley and Paitonu. Disappointing Cup Race. The Cup was a false run rare, and the stayers had no chance. Bright Day was withdrawn, leaving a field of seven and Star Ranger was backed right down to a very short price, carrying more than twice as much as Town Bank. Clarinda and Surveyor. When they
were let go Muraahi. on the rails, was first to show out. but he quickly went back. Star Ranger and Clarinda going out tu set a slow pace. This pair held charge through the straight the first time from Surveyor, Yoma, Town Bank, Muraahi and Income. At the five furlongs Town Bank had run up into third position, and a little further on Clarinda was in charge, to show the way into the straight from Star Ranger, Yoma, Town Bank. Muraahi. Surveyor and In- , come. At the distance Town Bank 1 challenged, as did also Yoma and Snr- , vf-vor. Town Bank prevailing at the ‘ finish by half a length from Yoma, with j Surveyor a neck away third. Income wrs a couple of lengths away fourth, and Clarinda and Muraahi next and the favourite last. It was a most disappointing race, for there was no pace on, and the result was the slowest Cup on record. It took them 59 3-ssecs to run the first half mile. 54 2-ssecs for the next half, mak ing imin 54secs for the mile, while the final half mile was cut out in 50secs, the time for the full journey being 2 inin. 44sccs. A Mild Surprise. There were only half a dozen runners in the Juvenile Handicap. First Acre being a very warm favour The result was a surprise. Scastar was quickly in front, soon to lie headed by ' Toapaiti. who showed the way into the ! i straight from Orcades. and Beast ar, ! with rhe favourite four lengths further back. Once heads were turned for j 'home Tip Tree came on th'* scene, and j finishing strongly won by half a length | from Toapaiti. with the unlucky First ' Acre only a head away. Seastar was fourth ar.d Orcades next. Although Tip Tree won well he was a bit lucky, for First .Vrc, when making his run, l at the distance was interfered with by Toapaiti. who appeared to go across in front of hije. A Disastrous Race. Thirteen was the main for the Nolan Ha k Cup. a good favourite being found 1 in Kilbronsyth. with Diogenes a good >** on-! choice, and Vaward and No Re- I sponse evenly backed. Going out of j the straight Bright Knight led Oicn- i gariff. Kilbronsyth, Diogenes, Mint j Leaf and \ award. There was no change going along the back, but at the half mile Mint Leaf moved up to the leader, and two and a-half furlongs from homo Bright Knight began to go back, to fall jusi. on tne turn, bringing down Catcall and Mountain Ore ami interfering with Vaward and Glengariff, but none of these appeared to have any chance at the time. Mint Loaf showed the way into the straight to Diogenes, No Response, and Kilbronsyth. and a ding dong finish was witnessed between | | Diogenes and Mint Leaf, the former' getting a head decision. No Response j was four lengths away third, ami Anchor ami Kilbronsyth were close together next, in front of Koauau, Kilmiss and Fire Brigade. An inquiry into the accident was adjourned. Bright Day Easy. Star Area was installed favourite for the Whareroa Welter, with fair support also accorded Tacticijni and Uralla. Before they haa gone very far ' Snatcher was making the pace, lead ing pas* the six furlongs from Uralla, Tactician, Star Area, Attractive and Mountain Br‘l. Along th.* back Bright Day and Attractive both made forward moves. Two furlongs from home Bright Day shot to the front and turned into the straight from Uraiia. Attractive, Mountain Bid!. Snatcher and Star Area. Once straightened up Bright Day went on to win by a length and a-half from Star Area, '"ho finished vzell a similar distance in front of Uralla. Imperial Spark, who was last for the greater part of the journey, was fourth and Mountain Bell. Attractive, Snatch 1 r and Tactician next. Willow Wai Improves. Thirteen went out to contest the Waipapa Hack. Novar being a £159 better favourite than Horomea. The start was a good one. Willow Wai. Starshell. Troilus. Grand Lupin, Horomea ami Blue Peter being the order at the end of the first furlong. At the half mile Willow Wai and Starshell were halfl a dozen lengths clear of the field, but the latter was beaten crossing the top. Willow’ Wai led into the straight from Roburitc, Starshell, Lady Anstruther. Horomea and Empire Camp. In the run home Willow Wai finished on better than usual and went on to win by a clear length from Empire Camp who came from well back. Roburitc showed a return to form by being a close third, and the next to finish were Lady Anstruther. Partaga, Starshell, Horomea (who needed the race) and Novar.
