GISBORNE MEETING COMMENCES TODAY (By “Early Bird.**) Fair fields only will be seen out at Gisborne to-day, most of the horses engaged being local. Monte has had the necessary experience over the sticks, but if Radio is ready he will prove troublesome. Polar has a great reputation, and without doubt he is a good sort. If reserved for the Park Hack Scurry Epistle will be the favourite. In the Wi Pere Memorial Automne will be a hot first fancy. Only half a dozen are in the Cup, and at the weights punters would appear to be justified in sending Chaplin out favourite. \ ivo and Jeannette read well in the Railway Hack Handicap. Tari has been given a good chance in the First Welter, although the distance will also suit Mangatoetoe.. Polar and Carniola are among those left in to contest the Park Hack Handicap. Of a big bunch in the Maiden Scurry, recent, form points to Red Autumn and Kilroe. WAVERLEY SCORES SECURES UNUSED PERMIT WAIMABINO CLUB NOT READY TO RACE. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. Under the last amendment to the Gaming Act, a number of new permits to hold race meetings were created by Parliament. Among the places to benefit when the allocation of these permits was made were Waimarino and Motueka, but so far neither of these localities has their properties in condition fit to race on. In consequence, these two permits would have gone unused during the current season were they not lent to other clubs. The Minister in charge of racing permits, Hon. Bollard, and the President of the New Zealand Racing Conference, ' Sir George Clifford, met in conference |on the subject to-day. The Minister announced that it had been decided that the permits should be lent to Wavcrley and Nelson. The Minister is the final authority in these matters, but a representative of the Racing Conference can act in an advisory capacity.
