[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. Perfect weather was experienced today for the third round of the ladies’ golf championship of the Dominion. The course, after the high driving wind of yesterday was, with the exception of some patches of casual water on the eleventh green, in perfect condition; the greens, in fact, having been cut over the week-end, were so fast as to cause trouble to more than one player, and threes on the green were common. Considering the weather the play was not of a high standard, although the contests on the whole were closer than on the preceding days. They were watched by fairly large “galleries.” The distinction of taking the first holo in one during the tourney has fallen to Mrs Cromb, a Miramar player, who holed out at 106 yards at the sixth hole in the coveted possible. Miss D. Petrie, in the play-off, won the Coronation Medal, for which she had tied with Mrs Guy Williams. Her card was 92, 9, 83, as against Mrs Williams ’ 89, 1, 88. It has been decided to hold a) long driving competition, and this will take place on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock.
CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY. MISSED PUTTS COUNT. Miss D. Petrie, who was beaten 2 up by Miss Withers, owed her defeat to lack of confidence on the greens, actually missing three two-feet putts in the round. She was throe down at the Bth, and made a line recovery to take the game to the 18th hole. At the ninth Miss Withers pulled her tee shot into the rough, and, failing to get out In two, gave up the hole. The tenth was halved in six. Miss Petrie, with three perfect shots, lay three feet from the pin with her third at the eleventh, and sank her putt for 4, Bogey being 5. Miss Withers put her second shot into the bunker, played her next across the green, and gave up the hole. She made up for this by taking the 12th in bogey, three, with a 16-foot putt. The 13th was halved in four, and the 14th, at which Miss Petrie missed a two-foot putt, in the same number. At the Crater Miss Petrie pulled her tee shot into the rough and, taking two to get out, was on the green in five, Miss Withers took the hole in four, and was again 3 up. Miss Petrie took the 16tfc in a perfect four, the game standing dormie 2. She took the next in six, Miss Withers’ tee shot finding the bunker. At the 18th Miss Petrie pulled her second shot on to the 17th fairway, played an excellent third shot into the bunker, which cost her the hole and the game. / Inability to Putt.
Considerable interest .was taken in the game between Miss U. Upham, the young Miramar player, and Miss M. Payton.. As in the preceding game, inability to putt was the deciding factor. Miss Payton, the winner, was not playing good golf, and had Miss Upham been able to finish her game on the
greens she would have won handsomely, but a succession of three putts to a hole proved disastrous. At the 4th (209 yards), Miss Upham was on the edge of the green with her tec shot, but took three putts, the holo being halved. Miss Payton holed a 20-foot putt to halve the next, also in 4. At the Gth Miss Pay ton found the bunker guarding the green, Miss Upham being on the further side of the green. Miss Payton played out soundly and holed out for four, Miss Upham not being able to do any better. Both were on the gjeen at the 7th in three, but Miss Upham, sank, a 15-foot putt, the game then standing level. Miss Payton took the next two, the tenth being halved in 6. Miss Upham won the next, but lost the 16th, 34, and the match 2 down. A Keen Struggle. A very close game was that of Miss Acheson and Miss Culling, which was won by the latter, 2 up. Miss Acheson won the first hole and Miss Culling, the second, the third being halved. At the fourth Miss Culling narrowly missed a 2, taking the hole in 3. The fifth was halved. Miss Acheson took the sixth and the seventh was halved in 4, bogey 5. Miss Culling was one down at the turn. Miss Acheson won the tenth and the remainder ]of the holes being halved, sho took the match.
