RETURNED SOLDIERS

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The returned soldiers held a reunion on Friday evening last at Harris’ tea-rooms, there being a fair number ipresent. Air J. Piddock was voted to the chair and after the. toast of “Thd King” was honoured, tdl present remained in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to “The Absent Comrades.” A lengthy to ist-list was gone through, and musical items and recitations were rendered by Afessrs Hcfferman, AVhiting, Dawson and Cummings. Messrs AVindle, Honore, and Piddock in turn appealed to the returned men to recognise the necessity of keeping the N.Z.R.S.A. alive. By paying subscriptions to branches or headquarters they would help to maintain the only body which would help their less fortunate comrades to obtain that, which they were justly entitled to. For the purpose of making these reunions a permanent affair, a committee consisting of Afessrs AA’indle, Jackson, ! L. Fagg land Piddock was formed, to organise for next year ’s function. The singing of “Auld Lang Sync” brought a most pleasing evening to a close. GOLF The Ractihi Golf Club held two competitions during the week-end. The putting competition was Avon bv Aliss Bryers and Dr. Boyd, who both did twice round the homo green in 16 putts. The driving competition for ladies was won by Airs Bryers, land Air Ritchie won that for the mon. PRESENTATION A very pleasing function took place on Tuesday evening at the Druids’ Lodge. Recently a very successful art union was organised to raise money for the proposed new hall. Bro. D. P. Scarfe was the promoter land arranged all the details, and at the conclusion handed over to the lodge something like £350 as a result of his efforts. Alombers of the lodge rightly recognised his valuable assistance land at the lodge meeting Bro. A. E. Urwin referred in eulogistic terms to the groat work Bro. Searfo had performed for the lodge. Ho presented him with a gold pen and pencil and also a magnificent rtise of 50 pieces of cutlery for Mrs Searfo, as a mark of the manner n which the members of the lodge appreciated both Bro. and Mrs Scarfe’s services. Bro. Searfo suitably replied.

RAETTHI DAIRY FACTORY I During the past season the Rtietihi Dairy Factory has paid out £22,000 and another £3OOO is yet to be paid in bonuses. During the last few years wonderful progress has been made by this factory for, where during the season, 1920-21, 48 tons of butter were manufactured, last season’s output was 188 tons, or an increase of 11.75 per cent, over the previous year. All the butter was graded at Wellington and out of the 58 factories operating in the province Ractihi war, second on the list for grading, and fifth for the whole of New Zealand. This undoubtedly speaks volumes for the manager (Air lAtkinson) and also for the district, 'which is making stehdy progress as a dairying centre. The above figures, together with other important information, will be placed before shareholders and suppliers at the forthcoming annual meeting, when no doubt all will be pleased lat the excellent results .obtained.
