EMPIRE WIRELESS
'GOVERNMENT URGED TO HURRY UP INTERESTING DEBATE IN THE COMMONS. i Received July 21. 11.45 p.m. 11 Reuter i LONDON, July 21. ■ In the House of Commons, when dc- [ bating the Post Office estimates, Air | Hartshorn taxed the Government with I lacking energy in the completion of the ! Imperial wireless system. ' Mr Widmer assured the House the Government was pressing the matter with zeal and energy. He denied that delay had occurred except in connection with the construction of north-eastern stations communicating with Australia and India, in which connection he pointed out that beam wireless was still in its infancy. Both the Post Office and Marconis were constantly gaining fresh information which on several occasions made a consistent policy < itticult. Moreiover, technical formalities in connection with the ownership of station sihs i produc’d delay but he hoped these would be completed in a few weeks. He I declared the wireless advisory committee was steadily progressing and arriving at recommendations regard tariffs, rutiles and arrangements whereby it was hoped to make the Empire system i consistent whole. He added that nowhere in the Empire was a beam station yet working under the conditions "f public service, but he hoped the service would be working in October between Britain and South Africa and Britain and Canada. Mr Ammon (Labour) said he hoped th«* Postmaster had not so handed over himsolf to Marconi that we were go[ing to find Imperial communication I hampered and checked. Ho stressed the necessity for getting a move on. Mr Mitchell Thompson thought Mr Ammon’s fears would prove unfounded Although the beam system was really more or less in the experimental stage they knew, and Alarconis frankly said they knew little about it, and until the stations were actually working they wore unable to do more than theorise. 1 he debate was adjourned.
