DEATHS OF PARTY LEADERS

INCIDENTS EV U.S.A. POLITICS NEW YORK, June 26. A message from Madison (Wisconsin) states that the Legislature lias chosen La Follette as the subjete for the second of two statues to which the State is entitled in the National Hall of Fame in the Capitol at Washington. The death of Senator Ladd (North Dakota), another Independent, within a few days of La Follette’s death, leaves the third party searching for a strong cohesive leader. Mrs La Follette is certain to be elected if she is a candidate for her husband’s unexpired term of senatorship, but she is reluctant to enter politics. Robert La Follette, junr., may attempt to succeed his father, but the latter’s followers are divided regarding his capability. The second son, Phillip, is expected to leave the law and become candidate for Governor of Wisconsin or member of the United States Congress. Meantime, the Republicans are doing everything possible to capitalise the situation and recapture their former prestige in the Independent strongholds, as part of which programme Air Coolidge personally visited Minnesota •shoitly before the death of La Follette. The situation summarised appears to be that the fate of the third party in the United States is hanging in the balance.
