PIRATING THE BROADCAST
ARTISTS TO BE PROTECTED. Received .Tune 28. 5.5 p.m. (Router) LONDON, .Tune 27. The House of Commons, by 123 votes to 30, carried the third reading of a private member’s Bill entitled “Drama and Musical Performers’ Protection Bill.” The object is to prevent the production of unauthorised gramophone records of performances broadcasted by artists. Sir M. Conway explained thtit at present it was not advisable for firstclass artists to perform for broadcast because the performance could be taken down by a gramophone receiver and gramophone negative made, from which records could be produced for sale, which would result in tho breaking of contracts between tho artists and the gramophone companies. The Bill would help to improve broadcast programmes. The Government supported the Bill.
