GOLF
BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. KIRKWOOD ONE OF THE FAVOURITES LONDON, June 25. At Prestwick, the open golf championship proper of seventy-two holes, thirty-six to be played to-day and the same to-morrow, opened in glorious weather. There are eighty-three competitors Kirkwood did the morning round in eighty-three. His long shots were wild and his putting erratic. He had four sixes. The leaders at the end of the morning round were:—Barnes (New York), 70, a record for the course; Wingate Temple (Newsam), and Taylor (MidSurrey) 74. Kirkwood did the second round in seventy-nine. He is not taking part in the long driving championship at Troon. Instead he has transferred his headquarters to Prestwick, where he played a round in the forenoon. He is well satisfied and confident. Experts bracket Kirkwood with Mitchell, Duncan, the two Whitcombes and MacDonald Smith as the likeliest winner of the championship.
