AMRITSAR RECALLED
INTERESTING POINTS RAISED. LONDON, May 4. Cross-examinling Sir Michael O’Dwyer. Mr. Schwabe, for the defence, said that he was geing to contend that what happened at Amritsar, where the troops fired on the crowd, was an atrocity wHich plain tiff sanctioned. Justice McCardie: “It might be necessary, in order to save tne Empire. to do things in such a serious situation which otherwise would be unjustifiable.” Mr. Schwabe read extracts from General Dwyer’s evidence. Sir Michael O’Dwyer salid that the facts differed almost completely from what he knew at the time of the incident. Probably he would have disapproved if the facts had been reported to him in that way, but he still thought General Dwyer justified in opening fire, knowing what witness did of the ways of a crowd. Justice McCardie: If these matters are going to bo raised, I am determined that the dying man shall have fair hearing.” The hearing wa s adjourned. (Sir Michael O’Dwyer is suing Sir Sankarin Nair, a member of the ■Council, and Secretary of State for India, in respect of allegations regarding the shooting at Amritsar, where troops were ordered by General Dwyer to fire on the crowd).
