MARTON NOTES.

FOOTBALL IN RANGITIKEI. (From Our Own Correspondent). In view of the opening of the football season on Saturday, 22nd April, the management committee of the Rangitikei Rugby Sub-Union met on Thursday evening. Mr A. Way presided, and there were also present: Messrs J. Raymond, L. Hammond, H. J. Fagan, J. Brady, C. E. Gibbons, B. Whitcombe, J. Hartley, and the secretary. The Huutervllle members (Messrs T. Marshall and A. Gordon) were unfortunate enough to get, a tyre puncture when near Silverhope, and after returning home were unable to procure another car, and therefore did not put in an appearance. Mr AV. Glenn, M.P., thanked the Union, for electing him patron of the Union, and showed his interest in the good old game in practical manner, by presenting the Union with a cup, which will be played for between the best teams in the northern and southern ends.

Mr Geo. A. Gamman wrote apologising for inability to be present, and suggested that another vice-presi-dent should be appointed in his stead. He also enclosed a cheque for £2 2/-. The committee were unanimously of opinion that they could not spare Mr Gamman from the Management Committee, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to him, likewise to Mr Glenn. The president announced that the Turakina Football Club had received sufficient support from residents in Turakina to procure a silver cup, which they wished the Union to accept, and also draw up conditions.— It was decided to hold a seven-a-side tourney for third-class players at Turakina, and conditions will be drawn up later. The chairman tabled a list of fixtures for the Senior, Junior, and Third Class Competitions. These were accepted with minor alterations. Five matches will" be played every Saturday— two senior and three juniors—and two third class matches will be played every Wednesday.

One new senior club has joined the Union—the Tokorangi—which is, with one or two exceptions, composed of Maori players, with Tau and Nero Paranihi- (last season’s senior players for Marton), taking a prominent part.—The Union allocated Marton as the home ground tor Tokorangi, and fresh fixtures will be published. All the affiliated clubs sent in lists of players for all grades. J. Patterson was classified as a junior player for Sanson, and L. Green and C. Hartley as junior players for Rata. R. McKay (who played for Marton last year) appears on the Marton and Bulls lists of players, and that player will need to make a decision before next Saturday as to which club he intends to play for. According to the lists submitted by the different clubs, there should be plenty of material for all grades of football.

The Marton branch of the Referees’ Association also met on Thursday, when Mr A. K. Drew (president) accepted the chair, and there was a big attendance of referees. Mr Cyril Sutcliffe (the newly appointed secretary), had previously drawn up a list of appointments for the first round, which with minor alterations were accepted. Home referees were appointed wherever possible, and, with two such capable officers as Messrs Drew and Sutcliffe, there should be a pleasant time for all referees appointed. , Lists of the first round of fixtures will be posted to all secretaries on Tuesday next. MARTON GUN CLUB. SEVEN DIVIDE PRIZE MONEY. Showery weather delayed the start of the £7 5 clay bird pigeon match under the auspices of the above club on Friday morning. After dinner at the Club ’ Hotel, where the shootists were entertained by the club, the weather broke, aud a fine afternoon was conducive to good shooting, which proved the case, for seven gunmen got in the final with the possible number of birds —25. Mr C. E. Gibbons ably filled the position of referee. Mr Benson (Feilding) was scorer, and Mr H. Nuttall was in charge of the traps. Following are the scores: H. Harrison (Stratford) 25 birds, 17 yards. N. Crabb (Marton) 25 birds, 12 yds. J. Crabb (Marton), 25 birds, 11 yds. A. Bartlett (Marton), 25 birds, 10
