TENNIS.

EASTER TOURNEY. The Tourney was in progress again on Saturday there was a large attendance present, at St. John’s courts in the morning and the Wanganui courts in the afternoon. Now that matches are reaching cue semi-finals and finals the games will be better right through. Play will continue on Monday and Tuesday, there still being a large number of matches u. finish.

Eighty games were got off on Saturday, and some close exciting contests were witnessed. Cuff beat Pritchard two sets to one and good spectacular tennis prevailed right through, although the latter made many mistakes.

The Wallace-Barkman match was somewhat changeable, the latter takaig the first set 6- —11, then Wallace asserted hitnselif a.nd ran out the ivinnez-v U—l, 6—2. Both players showed good form. Andrews (the Wellington provincial champion) beat Melody in his usual free slyle. Thompson (Auckland) beat Ralfe 6 —3, 6 —4 and will meet A. Wallace, the ex-New Zealand doubles champion, in the next round. Cuff and Wallace (ex-Wellington provincial champion) are still sure to meet in an early round, and the winner will probably meet Andrews, whilst Lampe and Wybourne and Powdreil and J. McDonald will probably cross swords.

In the ladies’ championship singles, Miss Cato beat Miss Shaw in a good three set go, the Hawke’s Bay champion being victorious. Miss Champion prevailed against Mrs Caldwell, also winning a hard three set go. Miss Darley just got home against Miss Avison and Miss Wells beat Miss J. Wilson, two sets to one. Mrs Knight proved too good for Miss Calver, and Mrs Bogle won 6—4, 6—4 against Miss Fenton. Miss Champion will be pitted against Miss Cato, Miss Darley will play Mrs Melody, Miss Wells Mrs Pearce, Mrs Lane Miss Boon, and Mrs Knight Mrs Bogle. Misse Calver and Hatrick won a keenly fought three set go against Mrs Bland aud Miss De Luen, the last set being an advantage one. There will be some further good matches in the ladies’ championship doubles, and Misses Fenton and AUer will meet Mrs K»ight and Miss Cato in an early round. The Men’s Championship doubles is still a very open event. Russ and Box did well to beat older players like Day and Wells in a three set go. Powdreil, and Lampe .should meet Andrews Bros., in an early round.

The Mixed Doubles Championsnip (present nolders Mrs Melody and Wallace) look a hard paix- to beat although with pairs like Mrs Knight and K. Wakker, Cuff and Miss Newcombe, Andrews and Miss Aller, McDonald and Miss Bain, Pritchard and Mrs Bogle, Cowper and Miss Cato, Barkman and Mrs Pearce, and Thompson and Miss Wells, lots of surprises may happen.
