FOOTBALL.
On Easter Saturday several football matches were played. The match between the Oriental team from Wellington and Kaierau drew nearly a thousand spectators to the Recreation Ground, who saw a fast and interesting game, although naturally for an opening game the quality of the play was not impressive.
Oriental won by 8 points to three, two tries with one converted to a penalty goal. Forward, there was little to choose between the respective players, and in the backs Kaierau made most of the play and threw the ball about, but the necessary finishing off touch was absent. The visitors won for the reason that they were quicker to grasp opportunities, a striking instance being their second try, when they turned defence in their own 25 to attack, and carried play the length of the field to score.
Siddells was the outstanding plajer of Oriental, and the big New Zealand rep. took a lot of stopping when he w'as moving. W. Ross played a fine gajne in the Kaierau van, while the Collier Bros, were prominent in their backs. F. Collier made some great openings, but be spoiled others by failing to let. the ball out. At wing forward M 1 Lean played a serviceable game, and tackled splendidly. On the Technical College ground Marist Old Boys (Wanganui) met Marist Old Boys (Napier), and after an interesting game defeated the visitors by 15 points to 6.
