REPLY TO ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD.
i In reply to His Grace Archbishop ! Redwood, niay I be allowed to point ! out that the public statements oi: Arviij bishop Ireland and Cardinal Man- ] ning, which are printed below, must have !>een subsequent to the private opinions to which His Grace refers : — ARCHBISHOP JREL'AND "The saloon is the deadly enemy of "the health of the home, of the lam- " ily, of tlie country, and o): God. I "And America demands, ana it will j "demand in stronger tones yet, that • 'this American saloon shall disappear " from the face of our fair land. We " must work and bend every etfort so ' "that Catholics in political matters j "will always be arrayed against the I "liquor interests." CARDINAL MANNING. "I impeach the hq.uor traffic of "high crimes and misdemeanor* "against the Commonwealth. It is "mere mockery to asli us to put down "drunkeness by moral and religious "means when the Legislature facili- " ties and multiplies inducements to " intemperance on every hand. Do "you know how you will help w " break up the unhoiy alliance be- • "tween the Government and the "greatest fraud of the age? Vote "against it!" Th© Archbishop is also probably not aware that far from Canada being more drunken than New Zealand the certified statistics for Canada show tnat the per capita consumption of liquor in that Dominion IS LESS THAN HALF THAT OF NEW ZEALAND, a/id the arrests for drunkenness CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN HALF. .1 should like to say, further, that there is no more fear ot difficulty regarding sacramental vine in this country than in Quebec. The Anglican Church, as well as the Roman Catholic, requires fermented wine for the sacrament, and these' two bodies form the larger part of the whole populace. Bishop deary's satisfaction with the proposed provisions for securing an adequate supply should also be borne in mind. R. S. GRAY.
