THE NATION'S GREAT TASK

AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. ' The Governor has received a telegram from the Secretary of State for the Colonies the following message from Mr. Lloyd George on his appointment as Prime Minister
"On taking lip the high office with which His Majesty th© King has charged me, I send you, on behalf oi: the people of the Old Country, a message to our brothel's beyond the seas. There is no failing in our determination tn at the sacrifices which we and you have made, and hay« still to make, shall not be m vain, and that the fight which we are waging together for humanity and civilisation shall be fought to a triumphant victory. We realise that we shall need every man that we can put into the field, every pound that rigid private and public economy can provide, and evea-y effort which the united people i can put forth to. help in the heavy task of our soldiers and sailors. The splendid contribution to the common cause already made by the Dominions can give us sure ooniidence that their determination is no less high than ours, and that, however long the path to final victory may h&, we shall tread it. side by side. In handing the communication to xv preSS for Publication the Hon J. Allen, who is at present visiting Auckland, said it was difficult to realise a more stimulating message than th© one which had come to New Zealand from Mr Lloyd George. "It is very gratifying to-New Zealand," said Mr Allen, to think that the newly appointed ±>rime Minister appreciates the contribution to the common cause that has been made by this and other Dominions it needs no words from New Zealanders to assure him that we all are conlident m. the determination to stand alongside the Motherland on the path to final victory, and, w e hope, lasting peace. ]. do hope that this message will, be read by everyone in this country, and will be pondered over at this time, and as a result we shall be more determined than ever to continue to do our pa^fc m bringing about results tnat we all so earnestly desire."
