THE QUEEN OF THE CARNIVAL

The procession proceeded along in front of the lawn, and halted near the grandstand. The' Queen came down from her picturesque carriage, and with the Garrison Band still leading, Bhe "was escorted by two welfcknowh natives (Napier Tauri and Rua Hoata), and her com-pany of mat-bedecked; supporters, along the length of the lawn in front of the assembled throng. The "Queen" was then shown to her "throne," a comfortable chair situated on the grandstand in a space set apart for the purpose, and overlooking the grounds. Above the throne were the words "Te Pura," Mrs. McGregor's Maori name, and the Union Jack was featured in the decorations. Mrs McGregor carried but her part with a natural and'^gracious dignity that pleased everyone, and the Queen was deeply affected by the honours done her and her race by the thousands of good people present.
