WELLINGTON, June 18. The Indravelli is still in the stream awaiting a crew. Twenty-seven men are wanted. A large number are willing to go on the captain's terms,' but dare not face the crowd hanging round the shipping office. The secretary of the Seamen's Union says' that the -demonstration is really against Asiatic labour. The job being only temporary, tho men claim that they are entitled to the full oqastal rates,. including time between their discharge at the Eastern port and their return to the Dominion.
INVERCARGILL, June 18. A feeble old man named John Kane, who has been wandering about the Pomahaka district, was charged with being an idle and disorderly person. He lias been wandering about wherever" he could get shelter, and refused to apply for a pension or enter the Home. Ml Cruickshank, S.M., said he did not like to imprison the man, who was too proud to accept a pension. He asked if he would go to the Home. Defendant said ho h:id his doubts about the value of the institution, and objected. A sentence of three months was imposed, the warrant to be suspended if he remained in the Caversham Home.
