MR DAVID M'LAREN.

Mr David M'Laren, who succeeds Mr J. G. W. Aitken, and defeated Mr A. 11. Atkinson, who led on the first ballot, is about forty years of age, and received his education in State schools in Dunedin. In his youth he was engaged in the bootmaking industry, and from the first showed strong labour views. For some years he was one of the leaders in the Trades' Union movement, and when he went to Wellington about twelve yeai's ago he organised the wharf labourers, -and the Union is now the strongest in the Dominion. Mr M'Laren was instrumental in bringing about the federation of the waterside workers, and is at present the secretary of the Wellington Waterside Workers' Union. For a number of years the new member lias taken an active part in the local politics of the city, having been twice elected to a seat on the City Council, a position which he holds at present.
