MR L. R. PHILLIPPS.

Mr Leonard R. Phillipps is a man of forceful character and decided opinions. Ho is the fifth son of Mr J. Phillipps, and is a native of Auckland, having been born at Mount Albert thirtyseven years ago. He has been engaged in farming pursuits since the days of his early boyhood. Until the Farmers' Union opened a branch at Helensville, Mr Phillipps kept aloof from public affairs, although always a student of polities. From the time of his taking an active part in Farmers' Union matters, however, he has figured rather prominently in the eye of the public, first as president of the Helensville branch, and then as the Auckland provincial president of the Union. An ardent freeholder, Mr Phillipps was one of those who took an active part in the propaganda in the north against the passing of the Land Bill of 1906. He led the anti-Land Bill campaign organised by the Farmers' Union, and addressed many meetings in various parts of the province at the time when the proposals were before the country. Recently Mr Phillipps spent ten months abroad, travelling over both North and

South America, besides visiting England and Europe, and only returned in time to prosecute his candidature for the Waitemata seat.
