OHAKUNE NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Hon. 'Hall-Jones arrived here last Wednesday by special coach. A deputation waited on him re roads.

Buildings are still going up. I see Mr Fletcher, from Raitihi, is erecting a store. The timber is on the ground, and the building is to be started at once. This will be a great" boon to'tihe place, as I believe several men from the' railway works have left 'through not being able to obtain enough food. : I hear that a young man from the works w«^a taken into Wanganui this week by Constable Pigeon, he being of unsound mind. He has 'been wandering about lately and causing a little excitement. . .

A picnic was held here last Monday, which was a great success. The running and jumping events were very good. There was a large attendance of visitors fro mall parts. In.the evening a.con_ cert "was held in the church, which, was well packed. The following items were rendered:—Song, Mr Price (encored); song, 'Mr Walker (encored): recitation, Mr Sturt (encored); song, Miss Armstrong; son, iMdss iMilligan; son, Mr Stephens; song, (Mr 'Daniels; song, Mr Nash; song ; Mr Allen (encored); song, 'Mr C. Richie (encored). After the singof the National Anthem the Chairman, Mr Ferguson, thanked those who had assisted, and this brought the concert to a close.

A big mob of cattle, passed through here last Sunday en route for Taihape. I notice they have started carting stones, via Taihape, which is a good tihiing for the Ohakiine settlers. What is sadly needed here is a moneyorder office. There aore a number of people living here, and I trust the Government will supply this 'want at once, and oblige the settlere.
