SOME COLONIAL OPINIONS
Received September 15, 10.45 p.m. MELBOURNE, September 15
The Hon. Alfred Deakin, inferring to General Booth's proposal, stated that he had a conversation, when he was a private member, with General Booth, when the latter indicated what his intentions were. He hoped to obtain blocks of Crown lands, either as grants or for ordinary payment, to provide himself with sufficient capital to make the settlement a success. The scheme provided for occperation amongst settlers, and advantage was to betaken of any advances to settlers, or legislation of that character existing in the State in which he took up quarters. He desired the Federal Government to help in the charter of transports, such as he had despatched to Canada. At no time had General Booth suggested any alteration to the Immigration Restriction Act. .
Mr. Watson thinks the scheme'is entitled to sympathetic consideration by tho States.
