UP RIVER WHARFAGE.
TO TES SDITOB
Sir,— On reading the report of the last Harbour Board meeting, the citizens were of opinion that the majority of the members had lost their senses. As the Chaii!: man has since stated that the Board will bo asked to put up a wharf he must havei rea ised that they were wrong. Mr Poison only asked the Board to do what was fair viz., to give the new company the same privilege that Hatrick and Co. has had all along, as they had a- wharf ready made, and yet Mr Hatrick had the bad taste not to support Mi- Poison's amendment. While giving tb: Chairman ci; i'l f-r good intentions, 1 must say, he allowed himself to be influenced by others, and finds himself acting against the (public sinterest. A member for the district he is expected to keep clear of cliques, and act in the interests of the people nt large. The matter of payment should be according to tonnage, and charged on the value of the whole, as it is all the property of the Board, and under their jurisdiction, Bett's Wharf should be extended upwards so as to give room for the present fleet, including the new boat, and the work should bc put in hand at once, as there will be great inconvenience as soon as the new steamer starts, -n I am, etc., SETTLER.
