THE GAB STAND

To The Editor.

Sir, — I think we must all agree that the Mayor's annual statement was one to be proud of, both from a financial point of view and a utilitarian one. I quite agree that our streets- outside' the real business centre are gradually assuming a more tidy and cared-for appearance, and the Council aro to be congratulated pn the results of its work done, so far, out of the loan. There is, however, an eye-sore and inconvenience allowed to exist right iri the centre of the town, and I refer to the cart stand in Ridgii ay Street. Take any large or important town in Europe one will not find a cart stand in a principal thoroughfare under the windows of the principal . hotel. . The question may lie asked, '"AVhere are the caits to bo rele gated?" My reply to this would be, "To Taupo Quay, on the unoccupied land, where a shelter shed- with telephone might be erected and thoso waiting for engagementwould always be found." Let this be done, and I undertake to isay that within a few ii eeks all concerned would feel at home and one of our leading thoroughfares relieved of a great nuisance.— l am, etc., •■ "
