SENIOR CUP— KAJEBAU v. TUBAKINA. [FBOM OUR OWN COBBBBPONDBNT.] The first Senior Cup match of the season, under the auspices of the Wanganui Eugby Union, was decided at Turakina on Saturday afternoon, when the contesting teams were those of the Turakina and Kaierau Clubs. This was the first appearance of both fifteens for a Senior Championship*, The Wanganui team journeyed to Tnrakina by Glover's brake, reaching its destination at 3 p.m. The game started at 3 30, McLean, the Kaierau skipper, kicking off, and Bell at full putting in a serviceable return. The maroons (Kaieraus) soon asserted themselves, and worked the oval' towards the Turakina back line, when from a pass McLean had a pot a goa.l. which was not successful. Upon play being resumed, the local men by some good combined dribbling rushes, in which Hockley, Keane, and- Schultze were prominent, invadedthe K,aierau's territory, and Bell essayed a pot, but the oval went a little to the right of the post; After the kick out a deal of loose play took place at half way, the Kaieraus again asserting themselves, but the press 'w.a.B relieved by a serviceable. kick by Ei' Woon. Hugh Cameron shortly after made ft capital run, and when collared passed to Wbon, who finished up with a kick into touch. A good opportunity to score was here lost by the Turakinas, The. ground lost by" th» Kaieraus was soon regained by a fine dribble by R. McLean; who played an honest game right through, • and some short runs by the backs, the Turakina territory being invaded/butf a good kick by Bell brought play back to the centre flags. ' Feake here put in "some very dodgy runs, being stopped with difficulty, and once almost got through but was nicely grassed by Knox.' ' The play at thistime was 'in favoup'of the visitors, as it waslocated attheir opponents' twentyfive flag. By sheer, hard work Tnrakina got themselves out, of danger, Hookler andPattereon being the principal agents in ao doing. Patterson dribbled through the backs and mulled Gordon, maroon full, who attempted to get his kick;. A scrum ensued a few yards in front of the Kaieran's back line, and it looked all over as if the local m?n would score, but the Kaierau forwards worked the oval to mid-field again, a number of. scrums resulting. On the play becoming open, Patterson, who was playing a safe game at half, punted well into touch. On the throw out, Schultze, wi.o was playing prominently, got possession and made a smart run, and being collared by Peake, passed to Cameron who also put in a serviceable run. The Kaieraus at this point, therefore, had to assume defensive tactics, but were eventually relieved by a very useful punt into touch by Peake. On the ball getting into play again near the Turakina 25 flag, Woon got possession and punted high well down the field, and following his kick secured the oval again and dribbleii right through and over the line, but 'tripped up when just on the point of scoring $' however, "Joe". Cameron, coming up fast from behind, fell on the ball, and thereby drew first blood. The kick, which was right in front, was entrusted to E. Wdon, who placed a clean goal; half time" was then immediately called,, the scor« standing Turakina 4 points, Kaieraus nil. Play was resumed again by' Cameron kicking off. Several marks here took place', Woon from one, fairly close to the gaol, essayed a place, but tne ball rebounded from a Kaierau forward and a lot of give and take play followed, principally kicking. . Peake, essaying a run, was chased by. Cameron, who brought- him down a regular cropper, but did not prevent him getting his pass to McLean, the latter only making a little headway. The Turakina forwards, headed by. .Keane and Cameron, got on a good combined dribble but they were too eager and kioked into the Kaierau full-back'a hands, who made a good return. Shortly after this, from a pass from McLean, Bfarvey took the ball and by a smart and dodgy run successfully eluded the Turakina backs touched down. He took the kick himself but no goal resulted, Hockly and Ber-tram-intercepting the kick. -Upon the resumption of the game, perhaps the principal features were one or tw6 forward Kaierau rushes'; which were nicely stopped by Patterson at half, but the former were not to be denied, and from similar play Blait, who was working hard, got over the coveted line right in' the corner, threo of the Turakinas crossing with him, I the four were proceeding to have a maul when another Turakina man joined in, ' [ and for that reason (by a. new rule just adopted) a try was awarded to the Kaieraus ; Bullock took the kick, which was about a foot from the touch, and placed a grand goal fairly over the centre of the crossbar. Score, Kairau, 6; Turakina, 4. The latter worked hard to avert a defeat but without avail, the game ending with the score as last given ; the Kaio--1 raus therefore won by 2 points. Messrs Brown and Morgan acted as umpires and Mr C. V. Powell as referee. The customary cheers were not given at the end of the game out of respect to the memory of the late Mrs Franklin.
