SINGULAR CHARGE AGAINST A CONSTABLE.

A, | (Per United Pbess Association.) Ashburton, May 28. Before the Magistrate to-day, Constable Smart -was charged with improper conduct and neglect of duty during the races last month. Tho principal charges were : — Refusal to step or eject persons betting when requested by the stewards j refusal to take into custody a person using abusive and insulting language to tho secretary ; insolent conduct towards the stewards, and betting himself, the same being forbidden on the course by advertisement, and placarded. On the constable's application the case was adjourned for a week. Complaint was made by the Ashburton Racing Club to the sergeant in charge of the district, and . the constable claimed an inquiry before tho Resident Magistrate, informations in terms of the comp aint being .laid by Inspector Pender.
