HEAVY NIGHT BOMBING

OF THREE ITALIAN PORTS CARRIED OUT BY WELLINGTONS. SPITFIRES SHOOT DOWN EIGHT ENEMY AIRCRAFT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) RUGBY.. May 22. The harbours of Porto Ferrajo and Piombina —two of “The Three Sisters’’ as Wellington crews call these two ports, and San Stefano—were bombed by Wellingtons in waves throughout darkness last night, says a Naples correspondent. A Spitfire squadron, which, last weekend destroyed seven Germans in one 24-hour period, went one better yesterday by shooting down eight of 20 bomb-carrying planes north of Anzio. The commander of the squadron (Squadron Leader Neville Duke) is the top-scoring fighter pilot in the Mediterranean area. _ Yesterday he claimed two, to bring his personal score to 26. THOSE “COUNTRY LADS” ' ALWAYS GET GOOD RESULTS. ADMISSIONS IN GERMAN REPORT. (Official War Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) DIVISIONAL HEADQUARTERS, May 20. “Whenever he uses the New Zealanders the enemy gets good results.” So reads a report on our methods of fighting which was submitted to the German First Paratroop Division by its machinegun battalion which opposed the New Zealanders when in the middle of March they attacked and captured the Cassino station area. A copy of the report was found on a recently-captured paratrooper. According to the report, our attacks are prepared by strong, well-placed artillery fire, which, when an attack develops, holds off the opposing artillery. The engineers are employed mainly in the quick repair of biidges and roads. “They are very skilful in the removal of mines, and are able to clear obstacles away very quickly,” it is stated. Under all headings concerned with our methods in defence appears the remark: "No experience of them."
